According to this post, one of Fred Phelps' many children broke away from his father and remembers Phelps beating his wife and children, but that once upon a time he was an exceptional lawyer who led civil rights cases. If so, it is very sad that he went from supporting the civil rights for one group to trying to deny them for another.
