Excellent article, and a necessary corrective to the "Civil War was about states' rights" crowd. Robinson is an excellent columnist anyway, but it is essential on this topic to hear from an African-American. In my humble opinion, Americans in general are unwilling to look at the more unpleasant aspects of American history and public policy, and I think that's wrong. An unpleasant policy MAY be necessary (but isn't usually) but the nation should be honest about it if so.
