Useful article on what the Civil War was about. The author, Carl Cannon, points out that some Southerners did talk about States' Rights, but the only right they ever mentioned was the right to own slaves. And while a lot of Southerners who did not own slaves did fight for the Confederacy, there were many reasons for it... protection of their homes, Confederate conscription, etc. Many of the non-slave owners rebelled against the rebellion, and some waged guerilla war against the Confederacy.
