Ok, I can't resist. This book had a real potential to be a shaggy dog story. It is a mystery told from the point of view of Chet, a dog who belongs to Bernie, who is a private eye. It could have been bad, and it could have been too cute for words, but Quinn actually pulls it off. The reader really gets a sense of Chet as a dog who can vocalize... in other words, there's a lot about scents and food. Chet does report most of what he hears, but occasionally he loses the thread when something more interesting comes along. Sure there are things Chet does that no dog has done yet, but the whole story has been built up so well the suspension of disbelief works. The story is about the search for a teenage girl that has disappeared and Bernie has been hired to find. Over time a pretty good picture of Bernie is built through Chet's eyes. He is, of course, a dogged investigator. Recommended. | |
