I had that same "the children are trying too hard to be conventionally shocking" experience 2 years ago. The HS my friend Becca's kids attended produced "The Vampyre". and there was even a bit of fuss because it was a PG-13 production.
Production values were good, but the blood / sex / terror linkage was pretty mild for our times.
