It has been a long time since I read a book I just couldn't put down, but this book is one. I just had to read the whole thing to find out what happened. The protagonist is Abby Cooper, a professional psychic. After doing a reading for a masked hit man at a wedding, Abby becomes dangerously involved in the Greek mafia. Meanwhile she is having difficulties in the early stages of her relationship with a hunky FBI agent. The characters are good, the plot is very involving.

Book Review: Miss Zukas and the Raven's Dance

Fourth in the Jo Dereske series about librarian Helma Zukas. I liked this one better, because it dealt with Indian culture. Helma's director forces her to work cataloging a collection of books at a local Native American museum after the murder of the previous cataloger. Miss Zukas becomes involved with a troubled Indian teenage boy who is a genius at carving, and it humanizes her.

It's been a long time since I read hard science fiction, and keeping up with the science and technology was quite hard. But Stross's vision is as interesting in political theory as scientific. It juxtaposes two cultures, one more advanced that is making no government work (the anarchist's dream), and one that has reverted to almost a feudal society. Everything changes by contact with the Festival, not a society at all but an information-gathering colossus with amazing technology they share in return for stories. The man characters are appealing. It is a real brain-stretcher of a book.
